MAJOR FUNCTION
General duty police work in the prevention of crime, in the protection of life and property, and in enforcing laws and ordinances, Work is reviewed by a superior through reports, inspection and observation and results obtained.
ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES
- Patrols an assigned area on foot and /or in a car.
- Checks doors and windows of business establishments.
- Investigates any and all unusual or suspicious activities.
- Enforces vehicle parking and pertaining laws.
- Watches for and makes investigations of wanted and missing persons and property.
- Makes investigations at the scene of accidents and prepares reports.
- Searches and apprehends violators.
- Serves subpoenas and warrants.
- Escorts funerals, assists children at street crossing and controls pedestrian compliance with safety laws.
- Answers calls for service.
- Escorts prisoners to police station.
- Testifies and presents evidence in court.
- Directs traffic at an intersection.
- Enforces traffic laws.
- Gives information concerning the location of street routes and buildings.
- Assists in the investigation of places and persons suspected of being engaged in illegal activities.
- Checks on operation of public places for compliance with the law.
- Develops and maintains sources of information.
- Assumes and performs related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICAITONS
- Knowledge of modern principles and practices of police work.
- Knowledge of the laws of arrest, laws of search and seizure, rules of evidence and court procedures.
- Knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances.
- Knowledge of first aid methods.
- Ability to observe situations analytically and objectively and to report and record them clearly and completely.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergencies.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public.
- Ability to meet approved physical requirements.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school or equivalent certifications and completion of minimum standards course set by Florida Police Standards Council (minimum certificate). Must meet all requirements as prescribed by the Fellsmere Police Department policies.
PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Tasks involve the ability to exert extremely heavy physical effort in very heavy work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, running, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of objects and materials in excess of 100 pounds. Tasks may involve standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. Tasks also include the ability to pursue and control suspects, use self-defense techniques and meet departmental firearms qualifications.
